Qualiterra provides high quality ichnological core photography along with detailed images of trace fossils, their descriptions and characterization of ichnofacies. Trace fossil characterization in some core samples can be challenging because of the difficulty in differentiating between host sediment and biogenic structures. There are several techniques that can be applied to improve the visibility and identification of biogenic structures. These techniques include X-ray analysis, computed tomography (CT), and multi-stripe laser triangulation (MLT), but most of these techniques are costly and time consuming. The technique that we use for core photo analysis is less time consuming and less costly and provides better identification of the biogenic structures. We use digital imaging techniques to enhance the visibility of trace fossils by modifying the image features such as contrast, lightness, color balance, brightness and saturation.
